Barton Springs Lifeguard Proposes Day to Honor Joan Means Khabele (Copy)

A current Barton Springs lifeguard asked the Austin Parks and Recreation Department at a meeting on October 26, 2021 if PARD would designate a day in spring 2022 to honor the life of Joans Means Khabele, who as a teen, organized protests with her friends at Barton Springs to end the racist policy of not allowing Blacks and other people of color to swim. They successfully achieved their goal of desegregating Barton Springs. Joan Means Khabele passed away on October 11, 2021.
